S - Scripture: Matthew 13:1-58 We open Chapter 13 on the same day (Sabbath) and Yehoshua (Jesus) goes out by the sea side and because of the throngs of people gets in a boat and begins to teach them in parables from the water.
1) Behold, a sower went forth to sow ...
a) Way side - doesn't understand the WORD and it is snatched away by the evil one.
b) Stony places - receives with joy, but can not endure for the trials and persecution.
c) Thorny places - the WORD is choked out by cares of this world and s/he is unfruitful.
d) Good ground - cultivated heart is s/he that hears the WORD, understands the WORD and does the WORD and brings forth fruit.
2) The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man (Yeshua) which sowed good seed (His children) in his field ... then the enemy comes and sows in the tares next to the wheat ... at the harvest the reapers (angels) will gather the tares and burn them and the wheat will be gathered into the barn.
3) The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed (the least of all seeds, but the greatest among all herbs when grown into a tree), which a man took, and sowed in his field ...
4) The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven ...
5) The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field ...
6) The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls ...
7) The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind ...
He spoke in parables to fulfill the words of Psalms 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old ...
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Therefore every scribe [which is] instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man [that is] an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure [things] new and old.
O - Observations:
Jesus spoke in parables and some understood and some didn't. Even the disciples whom Jesus praised for understanding had Jesus explain the parables in greater detail to them. He who hath ears let him hear! After Jesus had finished speaking these words He went to his own country but they were offended by Him Scripture says ... and He finished Chapter 13 by stating that He could not work there because of their unbelief (unfaithfulness, weak faith).
A - Application for me today:
I want to be one who hears and understands. I want to be as one of good soil, not letting the cares of the world to choke out what I sit here and read and gain insight to. I don't want to have a stony heart that receives this time with joy and an hour later is struggling under the weight of temptation and persecution and found lacking. I certainly do not want to give foot to the enemy to steal away the good seed. The tares will come and be planted amongst me, but we need not give foot to the enemy in our own lives by having a weak faith or by being unfaithful. I want His mighty work(s) in my life!!
P - Prayer in response:
Root out the stones in my heart Master Gardener, cultivate the soil of my heart so I can receive you not only with joy, but with understanding and bringing forth fruit. I want to be a scribe for you Father bringing treasure to any who would listen for your Glory. Give me ears to hear.
