Making this the Enoch Year - spending time with Him
... God created man (adam), in the likeness of God made he him ... And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Sheth ... Enos ... Cainan ... Mahaleleel ... Jared ... [and] he begat Enoch ... and [he] begat Methuselah ... And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah ... And Enoch walked with God: and he [was] not; for God took him. And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years ... Genesis 5:1, 3, 24, 23 (then there was Lamech and Noach & his three sons, Shem, Cham & Yapheth) ...
Whose likeness will you be made into? In all of the texts above about so and so begatting so and so, it is only said of Adam and Sheth whose image they were made in. The word is demuwth meaning "likeness or similitude" like a model or pattern with an appearance resembling that whose likeness they were made in and it is from the root word damah meaning "to be like, to resemble, to think, to be like or to become like". Who do you want to become like?
When my first daughter was born and they took her and gave her to me I did not recognize her because I thought she would come out with dark hair and olive skin like me, but this baby looked nothing like me, she was fair skinned and blond ... I still look at my gorgeous daughter today and see no resemblance in the way she looks to me, but her stubborness and persistence, well that probably has a little resemblance to me (as well as her father) ... my second daughter on the other hand is a spitting image of me ... her baby pictures and mine are so much alike that when I showed my baby picture to a dear friend she thought I was showing her Ainsley's picture ... in the very likeness of her mother ... there is a certain "proudness" you might say when one of your kids is born in your likeness, something I really can not describe ... it doesn't make the child anymore special to you than the other, but it's nice to have someone who resembles you ... perhaps that's one of the special bonds of twins to have someone who looks like you?
We are to be becoming more and more in the likeness our Savior. We are to be resembling Him. Do we look nothing like Him or are we starting to take on His Image? Are we starting to have some of the family characteristics of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control?
It says that Enoch ("dedicated") began to walk with God after he had his son ... many parents can relate to that. I had a good friend whose husband when he found out his wife was pregnant with their first child said to me that the only thing missing then was God and that is when he began seeking a relationship with the Most High. As a mother I know that I can not parent without Him!! My children keep me on my knees :) They keep me humble and realizing the huge task before me to raise them in a godly way ... what a responsibility!
Today in our gregorian world is the end of one year and the start of another. Enoch's days were 365 (years) ... 365 being of course the number of days on our yearly calendar ...
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and [for] years ... Genesis 1:14
As we have studied over the course of the last couple of weeks, there is a time for everything, there are seasons and days and years ... but for Enoch (who in essence was a "dedicated" person according to his name) it is said that he walked with God ... the original text is halak ~ to go, to come, to proceed [with God], to move [with God], to live [with God], to be led [by God], to be carried [by God] ... Gesenius implies that this word could have a very intimate connotation and it is also used in verses describing what it means to "follow the precepts of God" or to "be poured out" ... "to grow [in relationship with]". Enoch quite literally poured out his own life and became so much like or filled with the One he was walking with that he himself literally faded away. Isn't that what we are supposed to be like? To fade so completely away that all that is left in the mind and sight of others is Him!!! We have to get ourselves out of the way all the days of our lives ...
Job says "Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?" Job 31:4 Gesenius also references this walk (halak) this way "The place towards which one is going ..."
In a book "The Positive Mom" that I was reading out of yesterday she talked about how to be an encouragement to your children and she stated that we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith ... I quote now from those verses in conclusion of today's study ...
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith ... Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses [perhaps Enoch is there cheering us on?], let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us ... forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Messiah Yeshua ... That I may know Him ... Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. For many walk as enemies of the cross of Christ ... whose god is their belly and ... whose mind is on earthly things ... " Hebrews 12:2a, 1. Phillipians 3:13-14, 10, I Cor 9:24, 27 and excerpt from Phillipians 3:18-19
All the days of Enoch were 365 years ... can we as Believers make the next 365 days an Enoch year? Can we dedicate ourselves to the race set before us? Can we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, Yeshua? He is the goal ... the mark ... the One we can keep our eyes on ... setting everything else aside and anything that weighs you down especially anything (sin) that is contrary to the One we walk (run) with. Keeping your eyes fixed on the eternal and not earthly things and run, run like the Wind (the Ruach ... the Holy Spirit) (can you just hear the Chariot's of Fire theme music playing now? or the Rocky Balboa training music?) Forget the past (in my best New Yorker accent 'furgetaboutit') ... think about what lies ahead ... it's not about a "new year" it is about the New Heaven and the New Earth ... press into that ... press into the Coming of our LORD ... get to know Him more and more intimately, like a husband and wife spending "private time" ... get alone with your Bridegroom, become a pure spotless Bride, and press in ... in the words of songwriter Juanita Bynum ... go past the outer courts and to the Holy Place ... hunger and thirst for His righteousness ... LORD we want to see your face ... go past the throngs of people ... come broken in spirit ... bow down and worship Jesus Christ our Sovereign King ... so take me in to the Holy of Holies, take me in by the blood of the Lamb ... take the coals, cleanse my lips ... here I am ...
