December 30 ~ Tivet* 3 ~ Genesis 4

*Tivet is the Biblical month

A Restless Wanderer

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. Genesis 4:7

Because of Cain's sin in murdering his brother Abel it is said that God cursed him from the earth and Cain became a restless wanderer. This same term in the Hebrew is used for the Children of Israel when they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because of their lack of obedience and trust in the LORD to take them safely into The Land therefore they wandered.

Cain's Line....................Seth's Line (with wife's names**)
Adonai...........................Seth (Azura "well guarded" his sister)
(For God, [said she], hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.)
Adam.............................Enos (Noam)
(This is when people began to call upon the name of the LORD 4:26)
Cain................................Cainan (Mualaleth)
(Cain's wife was said to be Awan "iniquity" his twin-sister)
Enoch.............................Mehalaleel (Dinah)
Irad.................................Jared (Baraka)
Mehujael........................Enoch (Edna)
Methuselah....................Mehuselah (Edna)
Lamech (Adah & Zillah)...Lamech (Betenos)
Jabal, Jubal & Tubal-Cain..Noah (Emzara)

Another son needed to be born of the good seed so the our redemer could come. Seth, the son of Adam and Eve was born in the 130th year of Adams life. Was called "a pefect man" and was in the likeness of his father. The record says that he lived 912 years. During his lifetime he did "all which his Father commanded him to do". It was through Seth that the line of all of the prophets came. Cain on the other hand followed Satan and worshiped him, rejecting the teachings of his father Adam.

In both lines of Cain and Seth is a son named Enoch (Chanowk) meaning "Dedicated" hence the celebration that has just passed of Chanuakah "Feast of Dedication".

Proverbs 22:6 Train up or "dedicate" (chanak root of Chanowk) a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

We can be dedicated to a lot of things ... If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. Whom do you choose to serve this day? It is easy to speak the words like Joshua (24:15b) "but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." But can you speak them from your heart and act on them. We can rule over sin and master it if we dedicate ourselves to Him 100%. Cain's offering could have been accepted. How did Abel know to bring a burnt offering ... it is speculated that even before Sinai God had made His ways clear and Cain took the easy way out and tried to worship God in his own way, but God had already told them what was acceptable to Him.

As I tell my own daughter, "Your life can be very easy or it can be very hard, you choose! If you obey, life can be very easy for you, but if you do not obey it can be very hard."

Cain's disobedience caused him to be a wanderer, never truly finding God's rest. Seth's line on the other hand issued in our True Rest, our Messiah, our Savior. Will you be a child in the line of Cain, a murderer and a wanderer, or in the line of Seth?

Choose this day whom you will serve and who's will you will be dedicated to ... your own? or His?

** Wife's names are recorded in the Book of Jubilees.
Genealogy and meanings of one's name are two things I am interested in therefore the study of the lines or genealogy of Bible character's and the meanings of their names are of interest to me ...
According to the Book of Jubilees Adam and Eve gave birth to nine sons and daughters also. Jubilees goes on to say that Cain married his sister Awam and Seth married his sister Azura. One can understand how the Book of Jubilees is objectionable in the eyes of man today, but not in the beginning of creation. At beginning of creation, there would not have been an incestuous idea. In addition, God told man and woman to be fruitful and multiply. So, if Adam and Eve were the only humans, the earth could not be replenished if they did not conceive and allow their children to mate and conceive with each other. This possibility of Cain's wife being his sister would be acceptable in today's Bible with an explanation that at the time of Cain and Able marriage within family was not a sin. This then would explain where Cain got a wife. Realizing that many documents are not considered as inspired words of God, although, written at or about the same time as the book of Genesis leaves one to conclude that further research is necessary. Therefore, based on the study at hand, Cain’s wife was most likely his sister Awam.

In the Book of Jubilees, known to have been in use from the late 2nd century BC, the names of the wives of Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth are as follows:
Wife of Noah - Emzara, daughter of Rake'el, son of Methuselah
Wife of Shem - Sedeqetelebab
Wife of Ham - Ne'elatama'uk or Na'eltama'uk
Wife of Japheth - 'Adataneses
The Genesis Rabba midrash lists Naamah, the daughter of Lamech and sister of Tubal-Cain, as the wife of Noah as does the eleventh century Jewish commentator Rashi. In the mediaeval midrash Book of Jasher Chapter 5:15, the name of Noah's wife is said to be Naamah, daughter of Enoch; that would mean Noah married his great-aunt (and married into Cain's line).
