Scripture: Matthew 5:27–42
Observation: You get an idea by reading these verses what
is important to God. Here are three
things that I see as important to Him in these verses:
1. Commitment and purity in marriage
We must have discipline in both
desires and actions. We should not be
arguing about what the reasons are for separation and divorce in marriage. The church leaders of Yeshua’s time were
always asking, “What are the reasons for divorce given by Moses?” Perhaps they were asking the wrong
question. They should be asking, “What
do the Scriptures teach about marriage?”
2. Being full of integrity, someone who’s word can be
trusted
3. Having a servant’s heart and attitude. If we respond in love to others, our love and
generosity may change another person’s attitude or even draw them to Christ.
Application: I think the biggest thing here that Yeshua was
teaching about was our behavior with other people – those closest to us (our
spouses and family) and those we deal with on a daily basis. How do you treat others when you have been
hurt? Are you a person of your
word? If you are married are you
committed to that person the way Jesus calls us to be committed, not only in
words and outward actions, but in our hearts and in our thoughts?
Jesus doesn’t mince words. He goes straight to the heart of the
matter. We should do likewise.
