S:  Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; though war arise against me, in spite of this I shall be confident.  When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.”  Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.  Psalm 27:3, 8 and 14

O:  Introduction to Mark:  Mark was written about 65-70 AD.  By this time at least four of the disciples had died, three of martyrs deaths and one of unknown causes.  By now the Jerusalem Council had met to discuss how much of the law the Gentiles were to keep and most, if not all, of the other Epistles of Paul have now been written and copies were being distributed among the churches.  Mark was most likely the last of the Gospels to be penned and actually one of the last among the final eight books of the New Testament to be written.  The focus or theme of the book is “Jesus the Redeemer”.

In today’s reading of Mark the writer jumps right in with the baptism of Jesus and the many healings of Jesus and skips the whole first 30 years of His life.  This chapter shows us really who Jesus was.  He was compassionate, He spoke and acted with Authority and even the evil spirits saw something different in the Spirit of Jesus proclaiming Him to be “the Holy One of God” (vs. 24).  The news about Jesus was spreading so fast that He could not get into the cities according to Mark, but had to remain outside of the cities to preach and teach and the people had to come to Him.

A:  This question was raised in my Christian Doctrine class this week and I pose it to you, who do you think Jesus was?  Was He just a “good man” as many people believe?  Was He diety?  After reading Mark 1 who do you think He was?  Does it take courage to believe in Jesus in this day and age?  Comment below …

P:  Our Father, who art in Heaven Hallowed be Thy Name.  Your Kingdom come!  Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory for all eternity.  Baruch Hashem Adonai.  Blessed is the One Who comes in the Name of the LORD!  Amen & Amen.
