January 26 (Shevat 1) - Genesis 26

Shevat is the Biblical month.

DIGGING WELLS

S - Scripture: Genesis 26:1-35

Now there was a famine in the land ... And the LORD appeared unto him (Isaac) and reconfirmed the covenant with him because of Avraham who obeyed the LORD. Now as they were dwelling in the land of Gerar, for the LORD had told them not to go to Egypt, Isaac lied about his wife for fear that they would kill him and said she is my sister.

"And Abimelech said, What [is] this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us."

Afterwards Isaac lived there for sometime until Abimelech saw how mighty Isaac was becoming and asked him to leave. So Isaac left and came to the Valley of Gerar and begin to dig (dig, search, explore) the wells (well, fountain, something to be dug out, explained) which had been stoppeed up (made secret) by the Philistines and Isaac called thier names after the names Avraham had called them. His servants dug and found "chay mayim" living water, but the herdmen of Gerar wanted it, so Isaac moved on and dug another, which they strove for too and so they dug again and they did not fight over that one.

"... and he called the name of it Rehoboth רחבות (wide places or streets, broad or open place, to grow wide or grow large, to enlarge); and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful (bear fruit) in the land."

Then he went to the Well of Oath (Be'er Sheba') and the LORD appeared to Him and again confirmed the covenant and Isaac built an altar there and called on the Name of the LORD and dug a well. The servants came and said "matsa mayim" we have found (find, secure, discover, to prove, to be found sufficient, to be left after war) water!

O - Observations:

We can bring guilt on others by our actions. We must walk rightly wherever we go so we are not the cause for someone else to sin.

This chapter opened with a famine and closed with "matsa mayim" we have found water.

A - Application for me today:

I run in the path of your mitzvot, For you have set (enlarged) my heart free. Psalms 119:32

May the LORD enlarge us and bring us His blessing and multiply us as we seek to do what is right, His mitzvot (His commandments).

Sometimes we go through spiritual famines (hunger) ~ are we digging deep? Are we searching, exploring for "chay mayim" living waters?

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. John 4:10

P - Prayer in response:

Let me drink deeply at your wellspring of Living Water today! Do not let me go from this place hungering. I will open wide my mouth so you can fill it! (Psalms 81:10)
